My beloved sister passed away on February 14, 2017, as a result, my world came crashing down. For months the shock of her loss haunted me with questions. I could not understand how a vibrant, young woman could die. As the months turned into years, I slowly began to realize that I had forgotten a truth; death is inevitable and the time uncertain. As a result of this, I have an urgency to take steps to live a life that is meaningful, that has purpose; remembering that my time here is limited and when the time comes I don’t want to have regrets.
Finding My Life Purpose
It wasn’t easy to identify my purpose, therefore, committing to a daily practice of meditation helped me. This process was challenging for me, as my thoughts were erratic, all over the place and left me exhausted. I wondered if it was a waste of time, but slowly I was able to calm my busy mind and the ideas started to take shape. I was able to notice a common theme, writing my thoughts down helped to clarify some of the ideas.
How to Get Started
Take time to sit and visualize the activities that bring you joy, how do you envision your life, what do you see yourself doing, what do you dream of? These dreams are an excellent indicator of what your life purpose may be or at least there is a connection to the path you may want to take.
As you sit and think about the activities that bring you joy, take that feeling and become one with it. Become familiar with this feeling, as we stray from our path we lose that feeling of joy. No matter what you are doing right now, there is some sort of lesson that will help you get to where you want to go, or will help you identify your purpose.
Think about what you are doing now, how will what you are doing help you reach and accomplish what you truly want to do? As you think of your day, what activity do you love doing? What skill are you using when you do the activity? What you love to do will help you identify the purpose or path to take.
Giving Back – Volunteering
For me, the activity that gives me great pleasure is helping others. I do this by volunteering with various organizations in my community. Our life purpose is made up of small acts, it always serves others and it is not self centered. As you imagine doing the activities that bring you great joy, notice the following: are you working on your own or with a group of people. What age group are you working with. Are you working with people, plants, or animals. What skills are you using, and how do these activities increase your growth and self awareness?
Don’t Give Up
We are all deserving of living a meaningful life full of harmony, peace and joy. As I visualize the life that I want, I generate a strong desire to accomplish my goals and dreams. Therefore committing to living a life where I can be of service to others, helping to empower them to also reach for their goals and dreams. This is something that brings much joy and purpose to my day.
